Demographics

Portsmouth’s Hampton Roads location allows access not only to the city’s assets, but to those of the entire region. In fact, Portsmouth has a reputation as the region’s Job Center. Portsmouth presently enjoys a net in-commute of nearly 6,000 residents from all across Hampton Roads.

Confirming this, an April 2000 survey of Hampton Roads residents by a private research firm confirmed that an employer located in Portsmouth seeking employees for a customer service position would draw applicants from all over the region. And of the group who responded they were currently looking for or planning to look for work 53% would be interested in a customer service position in Portsmouth. For more details on Hampton Roads’ Workforce, visit the Hampton Roads Economic Development Alliance (HREDA).
